Exclusive to TCE, this is a ‘feel the wind in your hair’ day, which is easily customizable to your taste. If you prefer exploring at your pace with insider ‘off the beaten track’ places to visit programmed into the SatNav, and would like to discover the charm of the Cotswolds at a natural speed, this is for you!
Morning
You will be collected from your hotel after an early breakfast. If you would like to be driven, no problem, or we will provide a classic British sports car, Satnav to ensure that wherever you go you can always find you way home and a cell phone to your Vacation Manager, who is there to help you at any stage of the day. It’s your choice! In the company of your local knowledge expert we will spend the morning driving through some of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds, some largely undiscovered, but no less beautiful. You may like to stop and see some traditional English country gardens, explore a Norman Church, or walk part of the Cotswold Way, an ancient byway that meanders from Chipping Campden to Bath. Throughout, you will have the company of an experienced guide who will be at your shoulder throughout. If its specific experiences your after we have a wealth of choice to aim for. How about visiting the churchyard where Prime Minister Herbert Asquith and author, George Orwell (real name Eric Blair), are buried? In the same village and within half a mile we could visit: Wharf HouseThis was the home of Prime Minister Asquith and it was here that Britain reputedly formally declared it's entry into WW1. Situated at the unusual sharp corner of the village, Wharf House does not appear particularly imposing. Wait until you can see it and its lovely gardens and boat house from the rear to form an impression. "The Wharf saw many famous visitors before and during World War I. Lloyd George and Churchill stayed - Sir Winston wrote a letter to his future wife Clemmy from The Wharf - and were entertained by the PM's socialite second wife, Margot. Country Life magazine even featured it, calling it a 'minor country house', in October 1913." Lunch.Will be provided at an old Cotswold Inn, in front of a log fire, or in the garden under a blazing sun! Afternoon.
We will give you a choice of venues to visit, dependant on your interest – maybe the splendour of Blenheim Palace, the timeless peace of a cathedral or Abbey or a stroll through Burford’s antique shops before taking you to our own highlight of the day:
Afternoon tea, at a local manor house.
The owners will be delighted to meet you and talk about the history of their home and its surrounding neighborhood. This will give you a memorable picture of the Cotswolds not just as a historic and beautiful area, but also as a living and breathing community. This beautiful family home displays some wonderful features, mullioned windows, gables and Norfolk reed thatched roofs. The house is set in prize winning gardens. There is an outdoor summer heated swimming pool, tennis court, croquet lawn, billiards / snooker room and a 10 acre arboretum, for your enjoyment To round off your day, we will guide you (or drive you if you prefer) to one of our favorite restaurants, on the banks of a softly flowing river, for a stroll round the village before enjoying a delicious meal and a chance to reflect on the day’s experience. Finally you will return to your hotel, ready for a sound sleep! Product Warning: This day will spoil you! You will undoubtedly want to return for to explore this area in more depth.
